In September 1992, History is once again changing the panorama in the Hunsrück region. American troops who were based there for almost 50 years are leaving. At night, the streets fill with tanks and Galaxy transporters, taking the nuclear warheads, missiles and secret weapons.
Two years later, Ernst Simon returns to Russia where he was imprisoned for two years. Various Germans disembark with him, coming from Russia and the old Soviet republics and thinking that they will be able to live better in a reunited Germany.
The idyllic Günderodde house is in the middle of all these happenings. It is not just he noise the tanks which disturbs the calm. Unannounced, Lulu, daughter of Hermann’s first marriage, arrives at the house with her two boyfriends, Lutz and Roland.
In the Simon family, the patriarch Anton angers his son, Hartmut, by bequeathing his recently born grandson millions of his assets, accumulated from the optician’s business he founded. Romantically involved with Galina, one of the recently arrived from Russia, who is married to him, Hartmut causes a car accident in which Lutz, one of Lulu’s boyfriends, is gravely injured.
