Born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1959, he earned an engineering degree before studying film. He filmed his first short, “Cocoon”, in 1995. In 1998, he directed his first feature, “Small Town”. His third feature, “Distant” (2002, 27th Mostra), received the Grand Prix and award for best actor in Cannes, while “Climates” (2006, 30th Mostra), won the Fipresci award at the same festival. Also at Cannes, Ceylan won the best director prize for “Three Monkeys” (2008, 32nd Mostra). “Once Upon A Time in Anatolia” (2011) won the Critic’s Prize of the 35th Mostra and the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, and “Winter Sleep” (2014, 38th Mostra) won the Golden Palm also at Cannes. He also made “The Wild Pear Tree” (2018), presented at the 42nd Mostra.
