Born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1959, he earned an engineering degree before studying film. He filmed his first short, “Cocoon”, in 1995. In 1998, he directed his first feature, “Small Town”. His third feature, “Distant” (2002, 27th Mostra), received the Grand Prize of the jury and the award for best actor in Cannes, while “Climates” (2006, 30th Mostra), won the FIPRESCI award at the same festival. Also at Cannes, Ceylan won the best director prize for “Three Monkeys” (2008, 32nd Mostra). “Once Upon A Time in Anatolia” (2011) won the critics’ award at the 35th Mostra and the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes, and “Winter Sleep” (2014, 38th Mostra) won the Palme D’Or also at Cannes. He also made “The Wild Pear Tree” (2018), presented at the 42nd Mostra.
