Vera, a Spanish writer, is getting divorced from her husband. To get away from her problems, she accepts the offer to write several texts to go along with the pictures of an Argentinean man who died during the Spanish Civil War. Trying to find out some mysterious facts about this story, just as why a whale got stuck twice in the same beach or what made a prostitute travel in search of a photographer, Vera leaves Madrid and goes to Patagonia, Argentina. Along the trip, the writer is forced to undergo a mastectomy. At the same time, she has a relationship with a stranger in the same brothel bed, on which the characters from her book had sworn never fall in love and tries to become reconciled with the past.
