The inspiration for this film comes from a fantastic, popular, nineteenth century Portuguese tale. It is the story of a young aristocrat, Margarida, who falls for a local version of Don Juan, the viscount of Aveleda, seductive and, at the same time, sinister. The development of the theme is an exercise of the imagination - a film entirely sung - like an opera on film. Leonor Silveira makes her debut on the screen and is to become the director?s favorite actress. The film was awarded the Special Prize at the 12th Mostra and was also part of the Manoel de Oliveira retrospective at the 15th Mostra.
