How to explain the life of a couple these days? French director François Ozon chose five crucial moments in the life of Gilles and Marion to reveal the complexities of the couple’s relationship. Little by little, the plot unveils some of Marion’s personality traits, such as strength, determination and persistence, as well as Gilles’s own fragility. The story is told backwards and starts from the couple’s divorce meaning to end at the moment they first met. Through ups and downs, the degradation of this relationship is pieced together in a manner akin to the assembly of a jigsaw puzzle. But the definitive answers will be given by the viewer, who can work out the plot according to their own personal experiences.
