In an isolated part of India, Balaran and Nimai are friends working in a remote train station. To while away their time, they exercise their muscles wrestling daily. In the town, the priest is a person to refer to, responsible for a boy of seven, Matthew. All seems quiet, until this serenity is undone. The marriage of Balaran to young Uttara ends the friendship between himself and Nimai. Three extremists invade the village and kill the priest and a dwarf who protects Uttara. Chaos ensues. The only hope lies in Matthew. The film won the Prize for Best Directing at the Venice Festival 2000 and was included in the 24th Mostra.
