Tim was born in the small and fictitious town of Kleinruppin, somewhere in the middle of East Germany. Soon after he was born, he was adopted and taken to the capitalist side of the country. Sometime later in America in 1985, Tim, now 19, is the school heart-throb and is somewhat snobbish and arrogant. He attends an internationally-renowned high school in Florida. Before he graduates, he travels to Germany with his schoolmates and, on a visit to the grey and unglamorous Iron Curtain side, he meets his twin brother, Ronny, whose existence he was unaware of. Ronny asks to borrow Tim’ passport just for one day so that he can visit the other side of the border. Indifferent to his brother’ plea, Tim scoffs and laughs at him. Ronny overreacts and beats his brother up violently. Tim wakes up in hospital, and finds himself stuck in a Communist country where everybody calls him Ronny and thinks his story is crazy. While plotting to escape this culturally and politically different country, he falls in love, learns the meaning of true friendship, and experiences familial love for the first time in his life. During a swimming competition, Tim returns to his quiet hometown, Kleinruppin, and now he has to decide between going back to Florida and staying in East Germany.
