The young Christoffer has given up his Danish family’s fortune to live in Stockholm, Sweden, with his wife, the beautiful stage actress Maria. After his father’s suicide, he decides to go back to Denmark in an attempt to come to terms with the life that he left behind. On his return, Christoffer finds his father’s business on the verge of bankruptcy, his brother-in-law trying to win more power and his domineering mother insisting that he take over his father’s post. The young Dane becomes torn between the life he chose and his sense of duty towards his family. He ends up following his mother’s advice, but his family life and self-esteem are profoundly affected by his decision.
