Ephemeral City (2000)
Sobre o filme
Time has passed. Andreas feels the need to visit the Greek island where his mother was born and that he has never been to. He does know, however, that he will not find his mother, long since dead, or even the house where she lived. This, however, is of little import to him. His objective, in truth, is to find the heart of his very existence. Ephemeral City is a journey inwards, from Andreas‚Äô desire to rebuild the mythical site of his origins. The island he finds, however, is occupied by “foreigners”, tourists and refugees and this compels him to “build” an island of his own, even if ephemeral, where he may reawaken his memories. “My film casts a look at those who live in a foreign land, that of the hero who travels in a limbo in search of something as yet untouched, and also that of the refugees who were forced to leave their native land in search of a better fate”, says the director. Much accustomed to the films by Kiarostami, Paradjanov, and Tarkovsky, the greek director Giorgos Zafiris can not deny he favors themes such as exile and errant living, all of which reflects in this film with a predominance of plane-sequences.
