Hot off the success of trio Yellow Magic Orchestra and the release of his iconic debut score, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” (1983), the maestro Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023) shares intimate access to these career-defining performances and recording sessions. Inspired by the humming beat of 80’s metropolitan Tokyo, with Sakamoto’s transgressive style and defiant curiosity on full display, the documentary provides a rare look into the complex mind and artistry of one of the most fascinating musicians of the 20th century.
“Tokyo Melody: A Film About Ryuichi Sakamoto” was restored from the original 16mm negative and 16mm stereo magnetic reels. The 4K restoration was made in partnership with the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA) and Sakamoto’s estate, and was commissioned and produced by Kab America Inc., Kab Inc. (Japan), and INA.
