Born in Carranza, Spain, in 1940, Erice spent his childhood in San Sebastián. He studied film in Madrid, where he began working as a screenwriter and as a film critic. In the 60s, he begins directing short and medium-length films, such as “Páginas de un Diario” (1962), “Los Días Perdidos” (1963) and “Entre Vías” (1966). The 38th edition of the Mostra, in 2014, paid a tribute to the filmmaker, screening the features “The Spirit of the Beehive” (1973), best film at San Sebastián Film Festival, “The Dream of Light” (1992), winner of Jury and Critics prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and “The South” (1993), which had already been awarded with the Critic’s Prize at the 8th Mostra. Erice also directed segments of the movies “Ten Minutes Older - The Trumpet” (2002, 27th Mostra) and “Historic Centre” (2012, 37th Mostra). “Close Your Eyes” is Erice’s first feature film since 1992.
