Born in Hilden, Germany, in 1960. Petzold studied German and theater at the Freie Universität and film direction at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). He worked as an assistant director of Harun Farocki and Hartmut Bitomsky. He is the director of feature films such as “The State I Am In” (2000); “Wolfsburg” (2003), winner of FIPRESCI Prize at Berlinale; “Ghosts” (2005); “Yella” (2007), winner of the Silver Bear for best actress at the Berlin International Film Festival; “Jerichow” (2008); “Barbara” (2012, 36th Mostra), winner of the Silver Bear for best director at the Berlin International Film Festival; “Phoenix” (2014, 43rd Mostra); “Transit” (2018); and Undine, winner of the Critics Grand Prize and the Silver Bear for best actress for Paula Beer at the Berlin Film Festival.
