Born in Uruguay in 1958. Charlone studied at Escola Superior de Cinema São Luiz, in São Paulo, and began his career in Brazil as an assistant to cinematographers Dib Lutfi and Mário Carneiro. He was the cinematographer in films like “Feliz Ano Velho” (1987), by Roberto Gervitz, “How Angels Are Born” (1996), by Murilo Salles, and “City of God” (2002), by Fernando Meirelles, and got an Academy Award nomination for his work. His first feature, “The Pope’s Toilet” (2007), won the Jury Prize at the 32nd Mostra and was presented at the Cannes Film Festival. He also directed the feature film “The Story of Artigas” (2011, 35th Mostra).
