One of the most wanted criminals in Armenia, Gjo (The Mad Man) decides to return to his native land after he discovers he is suffering from a fatal illness. Gjo has escaped from the communist police by absconding from a psychiatric hospital and going into hiding in the United States. On his return. Armenia is no longer part of the ex-Soviet Union, but a country undergoing deep economic and social changes. Gjo decides to repay a debt to a former friend: a thief long since dead and gone. He uses the time left to him to contact friends of the widow. His plans, however, change when the mental institution where he was imprisoned is put up for auction. Before buying it, he decides to live with the eclectic inmates and devote his last days redeeming his sins by spreading joy among the patients. The head of the institution, however, recognizes him and wants to see the death sentence imposed on Gjo through to the end.
