Young musician Corey Harris travels down the Niger, in Mali, West Africa, and along the Mississippi, in the U.S. During his travels, he talks to experienced musicians to understand the roots, the significance, and the rhythm of the music from each region. Scorsese presents a cocktail of lyrics from original performances by such as Willie King, Taj Mahal, Othar Turner, and Ali Farka Touré, with Son House, Muddy Waters, Johnny Shines, and John Lee Hooker shown in rare scenes on file.
