Apu is an orphan living in Calcutta who spends his days playing the flute. One day he is invited by his friend Pulu to play for his cousin Aparna?s wedding. They arrive there, at a village lost in time, hundreds of miles from Calcutta, only to discover, to their astonishment that this is a marriage arranged. And, what is worse - that the bridegroom has gone mad. It is necessary, swiftly, to provide for another bridegroom to save the family reputation. Pulu implores his friend Apu to take on the role of bridegroom. At first, he refuses, vehemently, but later, out of pity, he accepts. Little by little, Apu falls in love with his wife. When she is later to spend some time with her parents, Apu is brought the news that he now has a son, but that his wife has died in childbirth. The child is to be his only joy in life, and to him, Apu will devote all of his love.
