The story of the Nolans, a family of Irish descendants living in Brooklyn, New York, in early 1900. Katie Nolan is a housewife who cleans the floor of the tenement building where they live and collect rags for sale to a scrap fabric dealer. She is married to Johnny Nolan, an alcoholic whose work as a waiter does little to support Katie and two children, Francie and Neeley. Winner of the Oscar for best actor in a supporting role to James Dunn, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
