Sobre o filme

A man from the city, cynical, with no illusions whatsoever, decides that his time has come. To make ready for death, he decides on a recluse existence in a site lost, far away in up-country Mexico. There he meets an aged mestizo woman with whom he is to share all of the vastness of an uninhabited canyon and dizzying, savage nature. There he is to come face to face with a reality that is to awaken him to new interests: he is to come face to face with redemption that will bring him to existential and spiritual rebirth. Japan was filmed exclusively with non-professional actors and, according to the director, the title does not refer to the country in the east. “I find the names of the films very descriptive. I believe that one word may bring to mind different ideas to various people. We might engage in interesting discussions as to why Terry Gilliam gave the name ‘Brazil’ to his film”, says Carlos Reygadas, the director.
