Nouadhibou is a small fishing village set in a small island off the coast of Mauritania. Young Abdallah goes there once more to see and also to say goodby to his mother while he awaits a hoped-for voyage to Europe. In this space of exile and frail hope, Abdallah who does not even understand Hassania, the dialect from the place, endeavors to decipher the code of the new universe presented to him as from initial contacts with the inhabitants of Nouadhibou. Nanja, a sensual girl, tries to seduce him. Makan, like he, dreams of immigrating to the old continent. Maata is an old fisherman newly converted into the electrician in the city who adopts as a pupil Khatra, a boy orphan. Full of encounters and misencounters, the fate of these persons crosses subtly before our eyes. Abdallah, his eyes fixed on the horizon, awaits the arrival of hypothetical happiness.
