Er Di has managed to live abroad illegally now for several years, but has been discovered and repatriated. In the time he was away, he worked in a restaurant and had a romance with the owner?s daughter. A son was born from this affair. Although he is from the same village as they are, the girl?s parents reject Er Di, forbid him from ever setting eyes on his son, and denounce him to the immigration authorities. Back in China once more, he lives as a drifter and spends his days doing nothing at all. There is only one person in his mind: beautiful Xiao Nu, from a second-rate opera group from Shanghai. After so many years away from his son – the child was only two when he was deported – Er Di decides to heed the advice of his older brother and sister-in-law who insist he must visit the boy. Even though he may have to face the resentment of the mother?s family, Er Di is set on redeeming his past.
