Letter to America (2001)
Sobre o filme
“Life goes by like a shadow...”, sings Ivan, trying to remember something beyond the first verses of an old song that, in his infancy, it was believed, could resurrect the dead. Confronted with the impending death of his best friend, Kamen, interned in an American hospital, the young Bulgarian will have the chance of trying out the power of his beliefs from the past. If only he can remember all of the words... The situation is aggravated when his visa to the United States is denied, and he is prevented from being at Kamen’ bedside in his last moments. Broken-hearted, but as yet in search of the song that will save him, Ivan arms himself with a small camera that he was given by a friend and sets off, bound for the interior of Bulgaria. Wandering through lost villages, the melancholic wayfarer comes to places on the edge of the globalized world where tradition struggles desperately against extinction. Physically unable to keep Kamen company, Ivan decides to send him a very special letter, with cuttings of pictures and statements from the characters he meets along the way, witness to a time and a lifestyle soon to be forgotten.
