Capitães de Abril (2000)
Sobre o filme
Portuguese actress Maria de Medeiros chose lyricism and nostalgia to portray the Revolution of the Carnations that changed the political and social course taken by her country. In Portugal, on the night of April 24-25, in 1974, a radio broadcasting station plays a forbidden song: Grândola. It might have beeen insubordinate action on the part of some rebel journalist, when it was, in fact, a signal planned from the first, for a military coup that was to change the face of the country and the fate of vast territories in Africa. To the sound of the voice of poet José Afonso, the rebel troops take over the barracks. At three in the morning they enter Lisbon under the command of young military personnel fighting for freedom without intimidating civilians or resorting to violence.Coming soon after the unhappy military coup in Chile, the Revolution of the Carnations in Portugal is characteristically of a political nature, but also unfolds peacefully, lyrically.Maria de Medeiros describes the revolution fondly and sincerely. This is a view of a generation born of freedom, focusing on those times of intense political passion experienced by those who believed they could change the world.
