Acknowledged writer and university professor Lawrence, age 60, arrives in an ancient and mysterious city to teach a winter course. Through his friend Elias, he gets to know of a strange house on the outskirts of town where elderly men, the majority of which with their days numbered, spend nights beside young girls who are asleep, heavily sedated. Lawrence, who is in quest of new experiences, finds himself suddenly captivated by the magic that subtly involves the "sleeping beauties". With them, the old professor recovers part of his lost youth, amid the memories of love affairs now buried in time. The visits to the strange house become a kind of addiction and feelings of anxiety, possession, and death begin to come to the surface in the previously commonplace person of Lawrence, features that he will be obliged to face in search of self-knowledge.
