The Journey to Kafiristan (2001)
Sobre o filme
In 1939, an exotic journey is the interest in common for two friends: Annemarie Schwarzenbach, writer, and Ella Maillart, ethnologist. Only, each has a different project. It is 1939. They leave Geneva by car, bound for Kabul, in Afghanistan, through Turkey and Persia. Annemarie, part of a circle of friends of Klaus Mann, is seeking refuge - an isolated place where she can discover herself. Ella Maillart justifies her anxiety, her need to move about and to travel, under the pretext that, as a scientist, she would like to explore the mysterious valley of Kafiristan and gain recognition, publishing books about the archaic life of the nomads who inhabit the inhospitable region. They travel on and on over the dusty roads, until the history of their own lives and unexpected political upheavals go counter to their fate. They have no sooner managed to reach Kabul than World War II breaks out.
